The Chapel of Santo Antão is uniquely perched atop an imposing granite boulder, approximately ten meters high, in the locality of Santo Antão, parish of Espariz and Sinde, in the municipality of Tábua. Its elevated position offers a unique perspective over the surrounding landscape. By circling the rock, one perceives the dizzying scale of the site and can observe a stream that meanders through the rock formations at the base of the slope.
The most striking characteristic of this chapel is its construction on top of a boulder, creating the illusion of a delicate balance. Although the view from the entrance may not immediately reveal this particularity, accessing the balcony at the rear of the chapel or observing its base, by the stream, highlights the remarkable height and the impressive way the building integrates into the rock. This fusion between human work and the natural element gives the place a distinctive presence and invites contemplation.
The construction of the Chapel of Santo Antão is linked to an ancient popular legend, which endures in the community's memory. It is said that, on a market day for cattle, a yoke of oxen got startled and plunged from the top of this very boulder. To everyone's surprise and relief, the animals fell without suffering any injury. This event, considered a miracle, is believed to have motivated the erection of the chapel as a form of gratitude. On the facade of the temple, the date 1840 is inscribed, marking the approximate period when this story of faith and providence is said to have occurred, cementing the symbolic value of the site.
