Located in the parish of Santiago, in Sesimbra, right next to the beach, the Forte de Santiago was built to protect this fishing village and its port.
It has been considered a Property of Public Interest since 1977, standing out for its history and state of preservation.
, The first fortification on the site dates back to the reign of D. Manuel I (1495-1521).
, During the Philippine Dynasty, it was attacked in 1602 by English ships, suffering serious damage.
, The current fort was built in 1648, during the reign of D. João IV, after the Restoration of Independence.
, The project was led by military engineer João Cosmander.
, It served as a bathing resort for the illegitimate children of D. João V, known as "Meninos de Palhavã".
, It became the headquarters of the Government of Arms of the region, coordinating other coastal fortresses in the area.

, The fort is part of the symbol of Vitória de Setúbal, which includes three towers, along with the Castles of Palmela and S. Filipe.
