Praia da Califórnia is located in the bay of Sesimbra, positioned in the central and eastern part of the village. It extends along a wide sandy stretch, bordered to the west by the area where Forte de Santiago is situated, a structure that separates it from the neighbouring Praia do Ouro. To the east, the sand adjoins a set of rock formations.
Its location in the bay contributes to the sea generally having calm waters and a gently sloping sandy area, making it a suitable place for swimming.
This extensive sandy beach, approximately one kilometre long, is known for its clean and well-maintained sand. Walking barefoot on the beach offers a pleasant sensation, in a naturally beautiful environment.
The waters of Praia da Califórnia are typically calm and clear. However, it is worth noting that during high tide, the strip of sand in the westernmost part of the beach tends to become considerably narrower.
An interesting aspect of this beach is its designation "Califórnia". Although there is no single and definitive explanation, one theory associates the name with ancient meanings such as "deep cave" or "fortune," possibly predating other better-known references.
In certain months of the year, typically between May and October, it is possible to witness the practice of Arte Xávega. This is a traditional form of seine fishing, carried out to keep alive a cultural heritage linked to the sea and the fishing community of Sesimbra.
Praia da Califórnia is a beach recognised for its quality. It has received the European Blue Flag in several years, an award that highlights compliance with demanding criteria in areas such as water quality, environmental management, safety, and available services.
The commitment to keeping the sand clean and monitoring bathing water quality are constant, ensuring an inviting space for its visitors.
Located in the bay of Sesimbra, Praia da Califórnia benefits from its own landscape setting. Although integrated into the urban area of the village, the beach is also within the influence area of the Arrábida Natural Park, which enhances the natural beauty of the surroundings.
The rock formations that flank the sand to the east add a natural element to the landscape, contrasting with the wider and more urban area of the bay.
