Located on Cabo Espichel, in Sesimbra, in the parish of Castelo, the Sanctuary is part of the Arrábida Natural Park and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1950.
It was built in the 14th century to protect an image of the Virgin found on the site. Later, lodgings were built to accommodate pilgrims, expanded in the 18th century through the collective effort of the "círios" (organized groups of pilgrims).
Built between 1701 and 1707, it has a richly decorated interior with marbles and architectural illusion paintings made by Lourenço da Cunha. It also contains a historical organ dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century.
A set of lodgings arranged in a row along the courtyard surrounding the church, where pilgrims found accommodation. This space served as support for large collective pilgrimages.
A small temple located on a cliff, decorated with blue and white tile panels from the 18th century, representing episodes from the legend of the Virgin's apparition. On the outside, you can see records of old tiles, although some are damaged.
Includes the ruins of the Opera House, built by the "círio" of Lisbon, and the hydraulic system composed of the Water House and the Aqueduct of Cabo Espichel, essential for supplying water to the sanctuary.
Cabo Espichel offers stunning views of the ocean and the surrounding natural landscape, making it the ideal place to enjoy tranquility and natural beauty.
