Situated in the picturesque Candeiro area, this Chapel of São Miguel is located in the town of Gestaçô, in the municipality of Baião. The chapel stands isolated on a hillside, occupying a small flat square that serves as a churchyard. This space, paved with cobblestones, is surrounded by residential buildings and cultivated land, offering a serene and traditional setting, typical of the Portuguese rural landscape.
The Chapel of São Miguel is a testament to architectural and artistic evolution over several centuries. Its original construction probably dates back to the 16th century, a period from which structural elements and the main portal are still preserved. Over time, the temple underwent significant interventions, notably in the 17th century with the construction of the bell tower, and later, in the 19th century, when the bell gables were enlarged. This chapel was officially recognized as a Monument of Public Interest in 2015, highlighting its heritage value and the importance of its preservation.
The exterior of the Chapel of São Miguel, with its exposed granite ashlar walls, presents a sobriety that contrasts with the richness of its interior. The main facade, facing west, is topped by a gable and stands out for its perfect arch portal, surmounted by a circular oculus. The bell tower, attached to the left side, rises in two registers and displays perfect arch openings for the bells, retaining pyramidal pinnacles that denote the undergone reforms. The side facades, though simpler, have transverse doors and windows that provide some light to the nave space.
Upon entering the Chapel of São Miguel, visitors are surprised by the vibrant interior decoration, which contrasts with the exterior simplicity. The ceilings are made of false wooden barrel vaults, particularly noteworthy is the nave's, which is composed of numerous painted coffered panels. These 18th-century paintings feature a rich hagiographic theme, with representations of various saints and the Mysteries of the Rosary, identified by inscriptions. On the Gospel side, the quadrangular pulpit, in white and gilt carving, displays cartouches and scalloped shell motifs. The perfect arch triumphal arch is profusely covered in gilded carving, extending the side altarpieces. In the chancel, the main altarpiece, also in national Baroque style gilded carving, is of remarkable quality, with twisted columns ornamented with vine scrolls and angels, and an impressive semi-circular tribune. This ensemble of carving and painting creates an atmosphere of great beauty and artistic depth.
