Historical Legacy

This remarkable building is a testament to Portuguese history, with its origins dating back to a time before the very foundation of the nation. The church was once an integral part of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ermelo, an ancient Benedictine convent from the 12th century. Founded by D. Teresa, the monastery was intended to house noblewomen, playing a significant role in the religious and social life of the time. Its existence throughout the centuries reflects a rich tapestry of events and transformations.

Architectural and Artistic Elements

The Ermelo Church is distinguished by its interesting combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles. It is possible to observe its longitudinal plan and the remains of the original three naves, divided by pointed arches. The beautiful Gothic window, which allows light to enter and defines part of its aesthetic, stands out. Inside, the triumphal arch is also pointed, adorned with carved mouldings and various motifs, a wooden tympanum, and two rosettes in the center.

One of its most unique details is the presence of the Coat of Arms of the Quinas (the shield with five escutcheons symbolizing the Portuguese monarchy), supported by angels. This coat of arms, carved on one of its Gothic columns, is considered the oldest coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal, conferring exceptional historical and symbolic value to the church.

A Testimony of Time

Over the centuries, the Ermelo Church underwent several transformations, including fires that consumed parts of the building, leaving today a structure that, despite the ravages of time, maintains its dignity and importance. Recognizing its undeniable value, the monument was classified as an Immovable of Public Interest in 1955.
