The Alexandre Herculano High School is located in the parish of Bonfim, in the city of Porto, Portugal.
This high school was created in 1908, during a period when the school population in Portugal was growing. The establishment was named in honor of Alexandre Herculano, a prominent Portuguese writer and historian.
Initially, the high school operated in a rented building, but due to the need for better facilities, it was decided to build a new building. The first stone was laid in 1916, and the school officially opened in 1921.
The original high school had 28 classrooms, science laboratories, a library, an amphitheater, and various recreation and sports areas. Many of these areas have been altered or removed over the years.
The Alexandre Herculano High School was closed in 2019 for renovations and is scheduled to reopen in September 2023. The degradation of the building and the competition from other schools in the vicinity contributed to its decline in students.
For tourists, the High School is an important historical and architectural landmark, reflecting the evolution of the education system in Portugal and the history of the city of Porto. It is an interesting place for those who appreciate educational and cultural heritage.
