The José Pedro House-Museum is located in the Real Forte Urbanization area, in Sacavém, within the municipality of Loures. It is integrated into a residential environment, offering a point of cultural interest within the urban fabric of this locality.
This cultural facility occupies the former residence of José da Silva Pedro, a talented ceramist and sculptor. It was here that the artist, during his lifetime, created and maintained his private museum, which he called "Private Museum of Art and Floriculture". He acquired the land in 1939 and built the house where he would later install this unique space.
With the purpose of safeguarding and disseminating the work and memory of José Pedro, the collection and the property were acquired by the municipality of Loures. After adaptation works, the House-Museum opened its doors to the public in July 2005, perpetuating the legacy of this creator.
José da Silva Pedro (1907-1981) was a figure intimately connected to the Sacavém Pottery Factory, where he worked as a modeler from 1934. Although self-taught in the essence of his artistic production, he revealed remarkable talent and a fertile imagination, developing a vast body of work over more than five decades.
His creativity was not limited to factory work; he also dedicated himself to personal projects that resulted in a diverse collection rich in detail. His art reflects a keen eye for the world, rural life, religion, history, and Portuguese architectural and ethnographic heritage.
Inside the House-Museum, visitors have the opportunity to explore José Pedro's artistic universe. The rooms present a journey through his life and work, showcasing everything from photographs and work tools to a varied selection of his sculptural and ceramic pieces.
The collection on display covers different typologies, including human and religious figures, meticulous reproductions of architectural elements such as churches, calvaries, and pillories, bas-reliefs, and decorative pieces. These works, executed in various materials such as clay, faience, or plaster, demonstrate the artist's attention to detail and expressiveness.
An integral part of the visiting experience is the garden surrounding the house, conceived by José Pedro as a "Private Museum of Art and Floriculture". This outdoor space is in itself a work of art, where sculptural and architectural elements integrate into the green landscape.
In the garden, you can discover small-scale constructions that spark the imagination, structures designed to house animals, one of the artist's great passions, a fountain, and walls decorated with panels and fragments of ceramics and tiles. Some of these elements were created by other artists who also collaborated with the Sacavém Pottery Factory.
