Rata Beach / Moitas Beach

Category: Nature > Beach

District: Lisboa > Cascais > Monte Estoril

Location

Situated on the coastal fringe of Monte Estoril, in the municipality of Cascais, this bathing area is peculiarly positioned. It is not a natural beach, but rather an ocean pool, a constructed structure that integrates into the maritime environment. It is flanked by the famous promenade that connects Cascais to Estoril, offering a setting that combines the proximity of the sea with the presence of the urbanized coastline.

Its location, next to the eastern face of Palácio Palmela, gives it a distinctive setting, with the architectural beauty of the palace complementing the maritime landscape. Accessibility is facilitated by its integration into the urban fabric of Monte Estoril, inviting a stroll along the waterfront.

Bathing Structure

Praia da Rata / Praia das Moitas is, in fact, an ocean pool with an extension of about 50 meters. This construction allows bathers to enjoy the ocean water in a more controlled manner, with the safety of a delimited space. The pool is bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, being periodically renewed by the tides.

In its easternmost area, there is a channel where the Ribeira da Castelhana flows into, a detail that connects the structure to a natural element of the territory, highlighting the engineering that allowed its creation and its integration into the environment.

Origin and Legacy

The name attributed to this ocean pool reflects a tribute to Alberto Romano, a figure who played a relevant role as the former president of the Costa do Estoril Tourism Board. This designation underlines the legacy of those who contributed to the tourism development and valorization of the region, transforming it into a point of interest for visitors.

Its existence as a leisure and bathing area is, therefore, also a symbol of the local commitment to providing quality infrastructure for the enjoyment of the coast, keeping alive the memory of personalities who marked its trajectory.

Quality and Environment

This bathing area is recognized for its quality, evidenced by the attribution of various awards over the years, such as the Blue Flag, the Gold Flag, and the recognition as an Accessible Beach and Zero Pollution. These distinctions are indicative of the commitment to maintaining the hygiene, safety, and environmental excellence of the location.

The general environment is conducive to moments of relaxation and contemplation. The ocean view and proximity to historical architectural elements create a pleasant setting, where one can enjoy the maritime landscape and coastal atmosphere, in a space that invites tranquility and well-being.
