The Loures Municipal Museum is located at Quinta do Conventinho, a historic property situated in the Ponte de Frielas area, within the municipality of Loures. It is set in an area that combines recent urban spaces with the tranquility and greenery of a former convent farm. Its position, nestled within this estate, offers a distinctive environment, away from direct hustle and bustle.
The museum occupies the premises of a former convent of Arrabid Franciscans, founded in the 16th century. This convent building, with its characteristic architecture, is in itself an element of historical and cultural interest. The museum was established on this site in 1998, giving new life to this secular space and preserving its identity.
This museum space is dedicated to the study and dissemination of the history and experiences of the municipality of Loures. The current exhibitions cover themes such as archaeology and ethnography, seeking to portray the daily life, customs, and knowledge of the populations that inhabited and shaped this region over time. It is an opportunity to better understand the roots and cultural identity of the local community, particularly its rural past.
The museum houses diverse collections, ranging from archaeological remains to objects related to rural life, such as agricultural implements and traditional means of transport, some of which can be seen in visitable outdoor reserves. It also has a specialized documentation center, a valuable resource for those wishing to deepen their knowledge of local history.
Upon exploring the interior of the convent building, one discovers the original layout of the space. The cloister, once the heart of the convent, remains a central point, surrounded by different wings. In the friars' former cells, some of the museum's reserves are now housed. The museum features exhibition rooms distributed across several floors. The Chapel of the Invocation of the Holy Spirit, with artistic elements such as a 17th-century canvas, is also an integral part of the complex and can be visited, as can the tile panels present in the cloister.
The museum's surroundings are marked by the presence of the estate and its green spaces. The extensive garden and wooded areas invite a peaceful outdoor stroll, offering a serene environment. This external area complements the indoor museum visit, providing a pleasant balance between discovering the built heritage and connecting with the surrounding nature.
