Located in the parish of Areeiro, in Lisbon, this square is a central point of the urbanization of the same name. Although formally designated as Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro, it is known by many in the city as Praça do Areeiro, reflecting its integration into this residential and commercial area of the Portuguese capital.
The conception of the square dates back to 1938, when it was integrated into the development plan of the Areeiro neighborhood. This urban project, authored by the architect and urban planner João Faria da Costa, aimed at creating a modern and cohesive residential area. The square was thus born as a pivotal element of the urbanistic vision of that time, marking the center of this new neighborhood.
The complex of buildings surrounding the square was designed by the architect Luís Cristino da Silva. His work in this area is particularly notable for being considered an emblematic example of the architectural style known as Português Suave. This style, characteristic of the era, is reflected in the harmony of the facades and the grandeur that defines the visual identity of the place.
