Located in Cascais, on the Portuguese Riviera, Casa Sommer is a historic building that houses the Municipal Historical Archive and a section of the Cascais Municipal Library. The space exhibits collections related to the city's archaeological, architectural, historical and cultural heritage.
Built in the late 19th century, Casa Sommer is an excellent example of a neoclassical residence in Cascais. It stands out for its exterior with smooth and curved pediments, fluted pilasters and triglyphs. The main façade has a rectangular portico that frames the entrance and a balcony on the second floor, protected by a balustrade.
Originally the residence of the businessman Henrique de Sommer, after the family left, the building was used as a language school and then as a children's home, before falling into disrepair. Casa Sommer was restored by the Cascais City Council and reopened to the public on December 7, 2016. The restoration, led by architect Paula Santos, included the construction of a new underground corridor connecting the main building to the former coach house, now the headquarters of the Municipal Historical Archive.
The site displays important historical documents, such as the Charter of Cascais, a royal document signed by Manuel I of Portugal, which regulated the administration of the city. Another relevant item is the Book of Postures, which contains the rules and regulations of the city.
