Gravettian, Magdalenian, and Neo-Chalcolithic
- The Cardina site, also known as Salto de Boi, is an important archaeological site in the Côa Valley, identified in 1995.
- It occupies two distinct platforms on the left bank of the Côa River, in a section where the river makes a sharp bend.
- Archaeological interventions between 1996 and 2001 revealed a Paleolithic occupation sequence, with phases ranging from the Gravettian to the Azilian.
- In 2014, new excavations expanded the intervention area, completed the chronological sequence of occupation, and improved the understanding of spatial organization over time.
- Discoveries in 2018 showed alluvial layers containing vestiges of the Middle Paleolithic, allowing the study of the evolution of lithic industries and the behaviors of Neanderthals.
