The Mother Church of Almendra is located in Largo do Adro, a central square in the locality of Almendra, municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. This square, typical of Portuguese villages, serves as a meeting point and offers a serene setting, where the church stands as an architectural and community landmark.
Its position in the heart of the village allows for natural integration into the local environment, inviting a moment of contemplation and discovery of the village's identity.
Built mostly in the 16th century, the Mother Church of Almendra exhibits a notable fusion of the Manueline and Mannerist styles. Its exterior, characterized by facades that were once plastered, is framed by robust granite buttresses, giving it a solid and imposing presence.
The main facade, facing west, stands out for its perfect arch portal, elegantly framed by pilasters and an alfiz. Above it, a triangular pediment stands out, integrating a cartouche with the date 1565, a testament to its construction. At the apex of the pediment, a protruding and concave-bordered oculus allows light to enter the interior.
Attached to the main structure, the church's bell tower is a striking element, rising in four distinct levels. Each level is separated by cornices, and its design reveals architectural details thought out for functionality and aesthetics.
On the top level, there are two perfect arch bell openings on each face, where the bells reside. Elements such as gargoyles and crowned spherical pinnacles give the tower a uniqueness that complements the architectural ensemble.
Inside, the church is organized into a rectangular plan, with a space divided into three naves. This arrangement allows for a large area for the faithful and reflects the typology of parish churches of the time. The naves are separated by columns that support the arcade, contributing to the grandeur and perspective of the sacred space.
Although the exterior reveals a rich architectural language, the simplicity of its interior structure invites introspection and appreciation of its original functionality as a place of worship.
