The Chapel of Our Lady of Viso majestically rises at the top of Monte da Senhora do Viso, in the locality of Custóias, municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. At an altitude of about 800 meters, the chapel is located at an elevated point that dominates the surrounding landscape, offering a unique perspective on the Upper Douro territory. Its position, often isolated from populated areas, invites contemplation of the surrounding nature.
The history of the Chapel of Our Lady of Viso dates back to ancient times, with the veneration of Nossa Senhora do Viso very likely practiced since the 16th century. Its construction reflects a vernacular style, characterized by simple and unadorned architecture. The materials used, such as schist and granite, are intrinsic to the region and give the chapel an authentic connection to its environment.
From the churchyard of the Chapel of Our Lady of Viso, the gaze encompasses a vast and impressive scenery. The high altitude allows for a magnificent field of vision, extending over valleys and mountains, fading into the horizon. It is possible to spot various villages belonging to the districts of Guarda, Viseu, and Bragança, making this spot a true natural viewpoint over the Trás-os-Montes region.
This place is a meeting point for local faith and culture, annually hosting the traditional pilgrimage (romaria) in honor of Senhora do Viso, celebrated on the second Sunday of August. In addition to its religious aspect, Monte da Senhora do Viso also serves as a venue for cultural events, such as the "Metac in Viso" festival, which takes place over two days in July, enlivening the mountaintop with a festive and welcoming atmosphere.
