Bordeira Beach is nestled in the landscape of the Vicentine Coast, integrating the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. It is located in the municipality of Aljezur, near the villages of Bordeira and Carrapateira. The beach's name derives from the stream that flows into the sea there.
One of Bordeira Beach's most striking features is its large expanse of sand. Stretching for several kilometers, it is one of the largest on the Vicentine Coast and in the municipality of Aljezur. This vastness invites long walks along the seashore. Being so open, the sandy area is particularly exposed to the action of the sea wind.
Beyond the sandy beach, the area is bordered by an extensive and remarkable dune system. These dunes advance significantly inland, shaping the landscape that extends towards the Carrapateira area. In addition to the dunes, there are pine forests with large trees, complementing the natural coastal scenery.
At the southern end of Bordeira Beach, the homonymous stream flows into the sea. Sometimes, depending on conditions, the stream forms a tranquil, shallow lagoon near the mouth area, before mixing with the ocean waters. This zone offers a different environment from the open sea.
The beach is set in a natural environment that maintains a wild character. It is flanked by robust, limestone cliffs, which exhibit light and warm tones, contrasting with other coastal areas of the region. These rock formations serve as a refuge for various species of seabirds, contributing to the ecological richness of the site.
Due to its location and exposure, Bordeira Beach is renowned for the conditions it offers for water sports, especially surfing. Waves can reach considerable sizes, and the presence of wind is frequent, creating a dynamic scenario. The characteristics of the sea and wind vary throughout the year. The waters tend to be cold, with currents that can be strong.
To appreciate the scale of Bordeira Beach and its surrounding landscape, there are wooden walkways that allow visitors to traverse part of the coastal and dune area. Some of these paths lead to elevated points on the cliffs, from where panoramic views of the entire sandy beach, the ocean, and the coastline can be enjoyed.
