The Church of Our Lady of Piety stands in the village of Odeceixe, in the municipality of Aljezur, occupying an elevated position that makes it a visual landmark in the local landscape. Its location offers a privileged perspective over the urban surroundings of the town.
Located on Rua 25 de Abril, the church is in a central area, making it easy to access and allowing for a quiet observation of its exterior and the surrounding area.
This temple has its roots in constructions dating back to the period between the early 14th and late 15th centuries, revealing a long history of continuous transformations. Over the centuries, the Church of Our Lady of Piety has undergone several interventions and restorations that have shaped its current appearance.
It is possible to identify elements from different eras, such as the triumphal arch which, despite being modified in the mid-16th century, retains traces of its 16th-century origin, possibly influenced by the Manueline style. The extensive renovations that took place between the 16th and early 17th centuries contributed to the building reaching the dimensions known today, reflecting the overlap of styles and periods that mark its construction.
Upon entering the church, one finds a very sober environment. The interior space is complemented by two side altars and a chancel that stands out for its Neoclassical style, bestowing a calm and contemplative atmosphere.
Among the most valuable and interesting pieces, the crown of Our Lady of Piety, the village's patron saint, stands out. It is a remarkable work of wrought silver, crafted between 1564 and 1565. Also noteworthy is a monstrance, also in silver, dating from the late 17th century, in addition to other liturgical items, such as chalices and patens, which enrich the church's collection.
