The Menhir of Cabeça do Rochedo is located in the Municipality of Lagos, in Portugal, near a quarry, in Lugar do Figueiral, in the parish of Bensafrim.
To reach the monument, follow National Road 120, about six kilometers northwest of the city of Lagos, in the direction of Bensafrim.
The Menhir is a megalithic monument of large dimensions, with a cylindrical and phallic shape. However, it shows damage, with a large tear in the center and chipped at the upper end.
The Menhir was part of a group of eight similar monuments, which were close to a Neolithic settlement. Unfortunately, one of the monuments was stolen, and the other six were removed from the site by the Lagos City Council. The Menhir of Cabeça do Rochedo is the only one that remains in its original location.
As a megalithic monument, the Menhir has great archaeological relevance, representing a testimony of the prehistoric past of the region. Its preservation and study contribute to the understanding of the culture and practices of ancient communities.
For tourists interested in history and archeology, the Menhir of Cabeça do Rochedo is a fascinating attraction. In addition to appreciating the monument itself, it is also possible to explore the surrounding landscape and imagine what life was like in ancient Neolithic communities.
It is important to respect and preserve the Menhir, avoiding further damage and maintaining it as a cultural heritage. Visitors should follow the established directions and visiting rules, ensuring the conservation of the site for future generations.
