This beach is located in the locality of Bordeira, in the municipality of Aljezur, forming part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. It faces the Atlantic, on a stretch of coast marked by low cliffs and rock formations that extend in both directions.
Its name derives from the large boulder that appears near the water's edge, an element that defines the landscape and creates sheltered coves when the tide is low.
The traditionally extensive sandy area has undergone recent changes, and in some areas, the sand has practically disappeared, revealing steep rocks with an irregular surface. This rocky terrain gives the place a wild character, in contrast to the neighboring fine sandy beaches.
The sea usually presents strong waves, appreciated by surfers, and the crystalline color of the water contrasts with the gray and brown of the rocks. During sunset, the light softens the rocky textures, creating a tranquil and uncrowded atmosphere.
The trail that leads to the beach runs through the coastal pine forest and requires about twenty-five minutes of walking. The path is narrow and winding, with some sections of loose gravel and low-lying vegetation.
In recent times, the effort to reach the sandy area is not always rewarded by the extent of sand available, but the route remains interesting for observing the native flora and the geomorphological features along the way.
In addition to the central boulder, the beach is flanked by cliffs where plants adapted to salt and wind grow, such as fixed dunes with beach grass and small clumps of sea juniper. These formations serve as shelter for coastal birds, so it is common to observe goshawks and other species flying at low altitude.
At low tide, the sandy area communicates with adjoining coves, making it possible to explore small natural pools formed in the rocks, where the water remains clear and cold.
