The powder magazine is carved into the base of a cliff next to Albufeira's beach, a few meters from the waterline. The main entrance reveals a tunnel opened in the yellowish rock, through which one accesses stairs leading to the ruins of the old castle, at the top of the rocky outcrop.
In the vicinity, the proximity to the sea creates a landscape where the sound of the waves and the contrast between the sand and the rocky wall mark the surroundings of this historical space.
This space functioned as a cereal deposit to supply the castle garrison, at a time when territorial control depended on the resistance capacity of the walls. The construction, possibly medieval, reflects methods of utilizing local geology to ensure protected storage conditions.
The interior walls, partially worn by the action of time and sea spray, still retain traces of openings for ventilation and structures that allowed for the stacking of provisions.
The fusion between the natural rock and the sculpted forms gives the powder magazine a unique atmosphere, where sunlight highlights the textures and ochre tones. The metal grilles of the secondary entrance contrast with the rustic appearance, creating a dialogue between the past and more recent protective interventions.
It is an ideal place for those who appreciate the variety of colors and patterns that erosion and human action imprint on the rock, as well as for contemplating the reflection of the sea on the internally excavated walls.
