The "Pintor José Cercas" House Museum is located in the heart of Aljezur's historic center. It is situated in the upper part of the old village, on a street leading to the castle, providing a setting that harks back to local history. Its courtyard or small garden offers views over the old cemetery area and the remains of the village's former main church.
This house was the residence of the painter José Cercas, a native of Aljezur, who lived between 1914 and 1992. It was he who bequeathed his house and its contents to the local municipality, with the wish that it become a museum space dedicated to his life and work, thus preserving his memory and cultural contribution.
Inside the House Museum, visitors will find a collection of artworks, including paintings by José Cercas and other artists. The collection also includes pieces of sacred art, furniture, and collections of crockery and faience. Many of these objects were gathered by the painter himself throughout his life, reflecting his personal interests and tastes.
One of the notable aspects of the visit is the recreation of José Cercas's studio. This space has been maintained in its original arrangement, allowing for an authentic perspective on the environment where the painter created his works. It is an opportunity to glimpse José Cercas's daily life and artistic process.
The building housing the museum is a traditional Aljezur house, dating back to the 19th century. It features a simple architecture characteristic of the region, arranged on a single floor. On the facade, a panel of figurative blue and white tiles stands out, a typical decorative element that adds a unique touch to the entrance.
