Situated in the city of Estremoz, in Largo da República, this building is located in one of the most central and accessible areas of the town. Its position within the union of parishes of Santa Maria and Santo André integrates it into the historic urban fabric, allowing visitors to easily find it and appreciate its characteristic Alentejo surroundings.
This imposing building has a long and significant history, with roots dating back to the 14th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Its origins are linked to the ancient Confraternity of Our Lady of the Martyrs, founded around 1370, which played a vital role in supporting the community by maintaining a hospital and an almshouse. Later, the Holy House of Mercy of Estremoz (Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Estremoz), an institution likely established by D. Manuel I around 1500, assumed and consolidated this important mission of social assistance in the town.
In 1610, the Misericórdia transferred its facilities to this location, known at the time as Porta Nova. It was here that the church, the cloister, and the necessary dependencies for the brotherhood's operation were built, solidifying its role as one of the pillars of charity and health in Estremoz for centuries.
The building's structure is a testament to its evolution over time, featuring architectural traits that were shaped between the 17th and 18th centuries. Although the Holy House of Mercy of Estremoz (Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Estremoz) moved its operations to another convent in the city in 1881, this location in Largo da República remains a striking legacy of its former function as a church and hospital.
Currently, the building continues to serve the community, but with a different purpose. It hosts the activities of important cultural and recreational associations in the city, such as the Sociedade Filarmónica Artística Estremocense and the Sociedade Recreativa Popular Estremocense, maintaining its role as a local meeting point and hub of vitality. Its relevance is underscored by its classification as a Monument of Municipal Interest, a recognition of the importance of its nave and the integrated movable heritage it still preserves.
