The Estremoz Living Science Centre is situated in the heart of Estremoz city, nestled within its historic centre. It occupies a significant part of the old Maltezas Convent, a prominent building that contributes to the atmosphere and context of the visit. Its position within the historic urban fabric facilitates access for those exploring this area of the city on foot.
This centre is housed in a place with a rich history and architecture. The Maltezas Convent dates back to the 16th century and features Gothic-Manueline characteristics. Its construction utilized local materials, notably the presence of Estremoz marble, a local identifying element. The building has been classified as a National Monument since 1942 and holds remarkable details within, such as the Misericórdia Cloister.
The main proposal of this Living Science Centre is to invite visitors to discover and understand where we live: Earth. The exhibition focuses on the concept of "Earth; a Dynamic Planet," addressing its formation, evolution, and the complex functioning of natural phenomena that occur on it. It's an opportunity to see how everything on Earth is interconnected, from geological to biological processes.
Unlike a traditional museum, this space promotes an interactive experience with science. Visitors are encouraged to touch, experiment, and discover for themselves, through dozens of interactive and exhibition modules. It is possible, for example, to simulate an underwater journey with the Rovin dos Mares, observe a replica of a volcano or a T-Rex, or learn about the origin and importance of the marbles from the Estremoz region. The approach aims to make science accessible and interesting for all ages and backgrounds.
