The Clock Tower stands next to Avenida 25 de Abril, in the coastal area of Bairro Novo, in the parish of São Julião. It is located right in front of the sands of Figueira da Foz Beach, integrated into the wooden boardwalk that runs along the seafront.
In the vicinity, modern buildings frame the Atlantic panorama, while the sound of the waves and the salty breeze enhance the feeling of proximity to the sea.
Conceived in the 1940s, the tower was designed by architect João António de Aguiar, with construction beginning in 1942 and its inauguration in 1947. It was intended to mark the hours for the population and to serve as an aid for coastal navigation.
In 1949, a sundial was added to its top, and in 2004 the structure was classified as a Property of Municipal Interest, acknowledging its role in the local heritage.
The cylindrical body, made of limestone blocks, features two dials with simple lines, with hands painted green, and is crowned by a Portuguese flag. At its base, abstract panels add a contemporary touch.
The contrast between the solid mass of the tower and the vastness of the sandy beach creates a harmonious setting, where modernist simplicity merges with the natural rhythm of the ocean, offering a unique photographic spot.
