The old Archiepiscopal Palace of Braga is located in the parish of Sé, in the historical center of Braga, Portugal. It is a building of great historical and cultural relevance.
Currently, the building houses the Rectory of the University of Minho and the Braga Public Library.
The architectural complex is composed of several buildings that have been added over the centuries, resulting in a variety of architectural styles.
The oldest building, known as the Medieval Palace of Braga, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It has a sober appearance, with fortification features, such as granite blocks and battlements.
The Medieval Palace of Braga has a facade facing the Santa Bárbara Garden, providing a beautiful view.
The buildings with facades facing the Paço Square were built by archbishops D. Manuel de Sousa, D. Agostinho de Jesus and D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles.
Paço Square houses the Rectory of the University of Minho, including the Noble Hall, where important university ceremonies are held.
The complex of buildings in Paço Square is divided into three wings, each with distinct architectural characteristics, built by different archbishops over the years.
The building facing the Municipality Square was built in the early 18th century in Baroque style. After a fire, it was rebuilt in the 1930s and currently houses the Braga Public Library.
The old Archiepiscopal Palace of Braga has been considered a Property of Public Interest since 1967, due to its historical and architectural importance.
