The Image Museum is located in the city of Braga, situated in the heart of its historic area, near the well-known Arco da Porta Nova.
The space is uniquely integrated into the urban landscape, occupying part of the ancient medieval wall that surrounded the city, which gives the place a unique character.
This museum stands out for its architecture, which combines elements from different eras. It is housed in a tower that was part of the medieval wall, dating from the 14th century, and also in a building constructed in the 19th century.
The restoration of these properties to house the museum is considered a remarkable example of architectural intervention that respects and enhances the existing historical heritage.
The museum was founded with the purpose of preserving and disseminating the important photographic heritage of the city of Braga. It began with the archive of the historic "Foto Aliança" and other local photography houses.
In its collection, it holds a vast array of photographs and old cameras, which document the visual evolution of Braga from the early 20th century to the present day.
In addition to presenting its permanent collection and the visual history of the city, the Image Museum is a place of constant activity.
Regularly, it hosts temporary exhibitions that explore various facets of contemporary and documentary photography. The museum also promotes activities such as guided tours and workshops, which allow visitors to interact more deeply with the world of images.
