Located in the historic heart of Braga, this remarkable Chapel of Misericórdia stands in the area traditionally associated with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia. It is close to Braga Cathedral, in an urban environment that breathes history and invites leisurely walks through the city's streets and squares.
The history of the Chapel of Misericórdia dates back to the 16th century, with its construction beginning around 1560 and being completed in 1562. The initial design of this temple is attributed to Manuel Luís, a master of the era. Over the centuries, the building underwent various interventions and remodelling that gave it its current appearance. Its historical and architectural importance is recognized, with the monument classified as a Property of Public Interest.
This temple is one of the few examples of Renaissance architecture in the city of Braga, although it exhibits a fascinating mixture of styles that evolved over time. Its main facade, of Flemish Mannerist inspiration, stands out for its imposing portal, which resembles a retable carved in stone. This portal is adorned with columns, medallions, and busts, revealing the transition from Renaissance elements to Baroque details later added. On its eastern side, the chapel also features a unique sculptural group in terracotta, a representation of the Visitation of Our Lady, flanked by other figures, which constitutes a rare example of Mannerist art in the integration of sculpture into architecture.
Upon entering the Chapel of Misericórdia, visitors find themselves in a single nave, covered by a wooden ceiling displaying beautiful coffered panels painted with rosettes and, at the center, the arms of the Misericórdia. The focal point of the interior is, without a doubt, the main altar. This is filled by a magnificent altarpiece of gilt carving in Joanine Baroque style, attributed to Marceliano de Araújo. It features a polychrome high relief representing the Miracle of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes, inviting contemplation of its artistic details. In the choir loft, a neoclassical carved organ stands out, enriching the ambiance with its historical and decorative presence.
