The Cruzeiro da Capela de Santo António is integrated into the Santo António area, belonging to the locality of Nine, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão. Its position, next to the chapel that gives it its name, places it in a local environment that maintains a strong link with its traditions. Its presence marks a discreet but significant reference point in the urban landscape of this area.
This cruzeiro, a granite structure, has its origins estimated at the beginning of the 18th century, in 1701, although its construction may have extended over a more extensive period of that century or even the next. Throughout its existence, the cruzeiro has witnessed transformations in the surrounding area. A notable intervention in its history occurred between 1980 and 1989, when it was relocated. This movement contributed to its preservation, ensuring that it continued to be part of the local heritage. Currently, the cruzeiro is protected by the Municipal Master Plan of 2015, recognized as an element of built and archaeological heritage.
Built entirely of granite, the Cruzeiro da Capela de Santo António is an example of the robustness and simplicity that characterize many of the popular religious works in the region. The choice of this material not only gives it durability, resisting the passage of time and the elements, but also reflects the availability of local natural resources. As an architectural element, the cruzeiro serves as a symbol of faith and devotion, common in Portuguese communities, often marking the entrance to a sacred place or a point of convergence for the community. Its presence, although unpretentious, invites reflection on the history and beliefs of the area.
