Devesa Park is located immediately adjacent to the city centre of Vila Nova de Famalicão, in the locality of Antas. It functions as an extensive green space within the urban fabric, easily accessible, and offering a tranquil contrast to the city's surroundings.
Its central position makes it a landmark and a green lung for those visiting or living in the area, providing a place to enjoy nature without leaving the main urban perimeter.
This park occupies land that was once rural farms that eventually became abandoned. The creation of Devesa Park resulted from an ambitious urban regeneration project, focused on environmental revitalisation and the enhancement of the space.
The project included the recovery and renaturalisation of the banks of the Pelhe River, which crosses the entire park area, the creation of a lake, and the rehabilitation of existing old agricultural buildings. These structures were transformed to host new functions related to culture and education, while maintaining their original design. The planting of tens of thousands of trees and shrubs significantly diversified and enriched the site's green landscape.
The park's landscape is marked by the constant presence of the Pelhe River. Along its banks, a natural vegetation gallery develops, contributing to the serenity of the place. The park incorporates lakes that add water features to the view, and the presence of natural elements such as granite boulders punctuates the paths.
Notable are large trees, some of them secular, such as ancient oaks, and other remarkable species, including sequoias. These natural elements invite observation and direct contact with a diverse environment.
In addition to its natural aspect, Devesa Park hosts buildings that serve cultural and educational purposes. The Casa do Território (House of the Territory) is one such space, central for activities and exhibitions. There is an outdoor amphitheatre, designed for events.
The park also integrates areas dedicated to educational services, cultural heritage, and archaeology, reflecting a commitment to learning and the appreciation of history and the environment. These structures allow the park to be more than just a green space, functioning as a hub of dynamism.
The park's design was conceived to provide various forms of leisure and promote well-being. Visitors can explore an extensive network of pedestrian paths, ideal for walking or simply strolling. The environment invites relaxation and outdoor socialisation.
It is a suitable space for a break from routine, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquillity of regenerated nature within an urban context. The diversity of environments, between the areas next to the river, the lakes, and the wooded zones, offers different scenarios to explore and enjoy.
