The Hermitage of Our Lady of Peace stands atop a gentle elevation, approximately two kilometres southeast of the village of Vila Verde de Ficalho, in the municipality of Serpa. Its isolated position grants it an atmosphere of serenity, with the building prominently featured in the rural Alentejo landscape. The surrounding grounds, dotted with cork oaks, invite a peaceful observation of the surroundings. In front of the hermitage, an iron cross complements the site's ambiance.
This hermitage, whose construction began in the 16th century, is a notable example of popular religious architecture that incorporates elements from various styles. While its base reflects the functionality and austerity of regional architecture, the chancel reveals the influence of the Manueline style, evident in its ribbed vaulted ceiling. The exterior of the building is enriched by details such as chamfered merlons and conical pinnacles, which underscore this architectural language.
Over the centuries, the hermitage underwent transformations that added new layers to its identity. In the 17th century, the narthex (the entrance porch) and the barrel vault covering the nave were probably built, introducing more sober solutions. Later, in the 18th century, the hermitage received its main altarpiece, which displays the characteristic plastic language of the Baroque, visible in its volutes and shell motifs.
The interior of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Peace features a longitudinal layout, with the rectangular nave leading to the chancel. The nave, covered by a barrel vault divided into sections by diaphragm arches, includes a holy water font and small openings. Access to the nave is through a basket-handle arch portal.
In the chancel, the main altar stands out. This altarpiece, made of grey marble stonework, features a niche with a curved lintel, originally glazed, framed by decorative volutes and shell motifs. Its crowning, with an interrupted pediment, includes a polilobate cartouche where the cross of the Order of Aviz can be seen, a symbol of historical and religious relevance, which confers a final touch of remarkable beauty and symbolism to the space.
Since its origins, the Hermitage of Our Lady of Peace has been an active pilgrimage site. Its religious purpose and inviting location amidst the Alentejo nature make it a reference point for faith and devotion in the region. Its simplicity, combined with the richness of its architectural and artistic elements, invites reflection and appreciation of the history and spirituality that reside there.
