The Municipal Museum of Archaeology is located in Serpa, in the Bairro de São Francisco. Its location is particularly significant, as it is integrated into the very Alcáçova of Serpa Castle, offering an authentic historical setting and an environment that complements the exploration of the region's past.
This museum invites a deep immersion into the history of Serpa and its territory. Through a permanent exhibition, visitors are guided through millennia of human occupation, revealing the remains of various communities that left their mark on this Alentejo landscape.
The exhibition route begins with the periods of Prehistory and Protohistory, presenting a collection of archaeological materials arranged to facilitate their interpretation. In this segment, a film by director João Botelho, which uses image and word, narrates the history of Serpa's territory, enriching the understanding of its evolution. The upper floor is dedicated to the Roman, Late Antiquity, and Islamic periods. Here, panel illustrations guide the interpretation of artifacts displayed in showcases and the architectural elements present. A unique intermediate space explores the world of the dead through specific pieces. The visit continues with the discovery of vestiges associated with the emergence of Christianity in the region and, subsequently, with a close observation of the Islamic legacy, featuring a diversity of objects and the experience of an activated Arabic voice, offering a sonic dimension to the cultural discovery.
