The Church of Santa Clara-a-Nova, officially named Parochial Church of Santa Clara, is the main religious temple of the locality of Santa Clara-a-Nova, integrated into the municipality of Almodôvar. It is a landmark in the local landscape and an important element of the heritage of the Baixo Alentejo region.
The original construction of the church dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Over the centuries, the building underwent works and adaptations that modified some aspects, but its main design reflects its period of origin. It is a place with a history linked to the community it serves.
The building presents a simple and traditional religious architecture. It features a single nave, which is the main area for the faithful, and a chancel, where the main altar is located. On the exterior, the church has a characteristic main façade and is accompanied by a bell tower, the tower where the bells are located.
Inside, although simple, you can observe elements that enrich the space. Look for the altarpieces, which are the decorative structures behind the altars, and the carved woodwork, which consists of sculpted wooden works. You may also find some tile panels that contribute to the decoration and tell part of the temple's visual history.
The Parochial Church of Santa Clara is recognized for its historical and cultural value. It is classified as an Immovable Property of Public Interest. This classification highlights its relevance in the context of Portuguese heritage and ensures its preservation.
