The Roman Dam of Muro dos Mouros is located in an isolated and rural area, framed by the characteristic arid landscape of the Alentejo. This site, situated in the Union of Parishes of Salvador and Santa Maria, in the municipality of Serpa, is accessible from the road connecting Serpa to Vila Verde de Ficalho, near Aldeia Nova de São Bento. Its location next to the Morgadinha ravine allows for contemplation of Roman engineering integrated into a tranquil and vast natural environment.
Built during the Roman Era, this dam is a remarkable example of the Romans' capacity for adaptation and innovation in water resource management. Its original purpose was irrigation, a crucial element for subsistence in a low-precipitation region. Currently, the Roman Dam of Muro dos Mouros remains an important historical and cultural landmark, offering a window into the past and the daily life of that time.
The dam's structure reveals the mastery of Roman engineering. With approximately 130 meters in length, 1.5 meters in thickness, and a maximum height of 3 meters, its curved shape stands out in the landscape. The construction rests on robust stone masonry, which includes a core of "opus incertum" and "opus caementicium", clad with blocks arranged in courses. Details such as reinforcements at its lower part (buttresses) and an ingenious edge at the top, designed to handle water pressure and small waves, demonstrate the detailed planning underlying its construction. A ceramic pipe is also visible, some distance from the base, which allowed for the controlled outflow of stored water.
Visiting the Roman Dam of Muro dos Mouros provides an experience of serenity, inviting contemplation of the Alentejo landscape and reflection on the resilience of human works. The isolated environment and the vastness of the surrounding territory, marked by aridity, offer a distinct and peaceful setting. This monument is a Property of Public Interest, valuing its historical and patrimonial significance.
