The Ribeira de Cobres Bridge is located in the town of Almodôvar, in the municipality of Almodôvar, in the district of Beja, more specifically in the Union of Parishes of Almodôvar and Graça dos Padrões, near National Road 2 and on the way to Mértola.
This bridge is of medieval origin, built between the 12th and 13th centuries. It is believed to have replaced an old Roman bridge, used on routes that connected Beja to the Algarve. Throughout the centuries, the bridge has been rebuilt and repaired several times, with a significant intervention in 1973, after damage caused by storms.
The bridge has three semicircular arches, with a raised deck, in Romanesque style. The arches vary between 2.3 and 2.65 meters in width, with the total length of the bridge reaching 35 meters. The internal width is 2.40 meters. The structure is made of schist masonry, with brick arches.
It was the only bridge to cross the Ribeira de Cobres until 1758. In 2002, it underwent restoration work, maintaining its historical importance in the region. In 1982, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest and is part of the cultural itinerary of the Historic Bridges of Alentejo.
The bridge has been replaced by a modern structure that carries National Road 267, but it remains a point of historical interest for those visiting the region.
