The Amoreira Dam is located in the municipality of Serpa, in the district of Beja, near the locality of Pias. Integrated into a typical Alentejo rural landscape, characterized by its vast plain and wide horizons, the dam was built on the Ribeiro do Enxoé, one of the tributaries of the Guadiana River, and not directly on the main river. Access to the site reveals an area of open fields, conveying the sense of amplitude so characteristic of the plain.
Built between 2007 and 2009, the Amoreira Dam represents a remarkable contemporary engineering work. Its structure, predominantly designed in earth, demonstrates the technical capacity applied to water resource management in the region. The primary purpose of the dam is to store a considerable volume of water, essential for the irrigation of extensive agricultural areas in Alentejo, contributing decisively to the productivity and sustainability of the sector. Additionally, its construction brought improvements to the surrounding road network, with the construction of a new bridge that optimized accessibility in the area.
The Amoreira Dam reveals a scene of serenity and amplitude, where the large expanse of water mirrors the vast Alentejo sky. This mirror of water, which contrasts with the characteristic aridity of the plain, constitutes a point of visual interest and a refuge of tranquility. It is an ideal place for nature contemplation, immersed in the calm of the rural environment. The particular light of southern Portugal accentuates the beauty of the landscape, inviting careful observation of the local ecosystem and the experience of moments of peace.
