The Church of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Almodôvar is located in the heart of the town, in Praça da República. Its central position makes it easily accessible for those strolling through the historic area.
This building marks one of the corners of the square, with its main facade facing a side street and the most prominent elevation facing the Praça, a cobbled area with some trees.
The history of this church dates back to the 16th century, having been built by the local Brotherhood of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia. It served and still serves as the center of the religious and social activity of this institution in the town.
Over the centuries, the building received improvements and decorations that reflect the artistic styles of different eras, notably in the 17th century and the early 19th century.
The church features an architecture predominantly of the so-called Plain Style (Estilo Chão), characterized by its sobriety and straight lines. However, elements of later styles that enrich the ensemble, such as Mannerism and Baroque, are also observed.
On the exterior, the attention given to its portals, which show classical influences, stands out. The side portal, which opens onto Praça da República, is particularly elaborate and meticulously designed, suggesting its importance in the urban context of the town.
One of the most notable elements of the church is the Chapel of Senhor do Calvário, visible from the exterior through its large glazed doors. This chapel is of considerable size and was designed to be a "passo" (a station of the cross or a space for passion plays), a space dedicated to the representation of scenes from the Passion of Christ.
The presence of this chapel demonstrates the profound devotion to Christ that historically characterized the Brotherhoods of Misericórdia. The chapel protrudes slightly from the main body of the church and features a distinctive curved finial at the top, decorated with pinnacles, suggesting its addition probably in the 18th century.
Upon entering the church, the eye is drawn to the main altarpiece, a beautiful example of the 17th-century Baroque style. This altarpiece, executed in the second half of the 17th century, is richly ornamented with gilded carving and bears the royal coat of arms at its crowning.
The interior walls are covered by a set of mural paintings and stuccoes executed in the 19th century, in the Neoclassical taste. These decorative elements, dated 1810 according to a visible inscription, feature frames imitating marble and incorporate classical figures such as grotesques, urns, and garlands, creating a distinct and harmonious interior environment.
