Location

The Moinho da Pipa is located in the vicinity of Ribeira da Múrtega, integrated into the natural landscape of the Barrancos municipality. This position grants it a tranquil and rural environment, where the presence of water is a central element. The site offers a serene atmosphere, characteristic of the Alentejo interior.

A Testimony of the 19th Century

Dating back to the 19th century, the Moinho da Pipa represents a notable example of the old watermills present in southern Portugal. A visit allows for a close observation of a structure that reveals the cereal milling methods used in that era. The mill is maintained in an excellent state of conservation, providing a window into the past and the importance of water in the local economy of the time.

The Mechanics of Milling

This mill operates as an immersion mill, a type of device that depended directly on the force and speed of the watercourse to function. The complex consists of the cereal milling area and the old miller's house. Also part of the ensemble is a weir, a small artisanal dam, essential for directing and controlling the water flow that moved the millstones. It is believed that wheat cultivated in the region was the predominant cereal milled at this location.

A Symbolic Detail

Next to the mill, there is a small spring that complements the beauty of the space. In this spring, there is an image of Nossa Senhora da Pipa. It is likely that this religious figure and the spring itself gave the mill its name, adding a layer of cultural and symbolic meaning to its history.
