The Castle of Cid is located near the village of Barrancos, in the municipality of the same name, in an area of gentle relief and Mediterranean vegetation. The ruins are situated at an altitude of approximately 220 meters, at a point overlooking the left bank of the Ardila stream, offering a wide view of the valley and the slopes covered with cork oaks and holm oaks. The landscape is marked by rural silence and the preserved natural environment that characterizes this region of the interior Alentejo.

Access is via dirt tracks, crossing the Herdade das Russianas, a property where traces of ancient silver, copper, and iron mining operations can also be found, testifying to the mining importance this area held in remote times.

Origin and Historical Value

The site where the Castle of Cid stands has ancient origins and is associated with an old fortified settlement from the pre-Roman or Roman period. According to some studies, it may have been occupied in the 1st century BC and related to the conflicts that opposed Sertorius to the Roman Empire, during the civil wars that marked the Iberian Peninsula. Although the castle itself is in ruins, the collection of stones and walls scattered across the terrain suggests the existence of an ancient defensive fortification.

The toponym “Cid” has fueled various popular legends, one of which associates the site with the legendary Castilian warrior Cid Campeador, who, according to oral tradition, may have sought refuge in these borderlands during his campaigns. Although without documentary basis, these stories have contributed to the charm and mystery surrounding the site.

The current scenery of the Castle of Cid is dominated by a serene natural environment, where the green of the pastures contrasts with the worn stones of the ancient wall. The space conveys a sense of isolation and direct connection with nature, ideal for those who appreciate places where history and silence meet.
