The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is located in the city of Viseu, in an area known as Cava de Viriato. This temple is situated on the right bank of the Pavia river, in a setting that has been recently enhanced. The landscaping of the surrounding area contributes to the visitor's experience, offering a well-maintained environment around the church.
Built in the second half of the 18th century, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is a small temple distinguished by its facade. Its design, created in 1757 by António Mendes Coutinho, brought the innovative lines of the Rococo style to Viseu, drawing inspiration from works by renowned architects such as André Soares, in Braga, and Nicolau Nazoni, in Lamego. This architectural intervention was significant for the renovation of churches and chapels in the Viseu region.
Inside the church, visitors will find three altarpieces dating from the second half of the 18th century. The main altarpiece is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição, housing an image of the saint that dates back to the 17th century. The other two side altarpieces honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Anthony, enriching the space with their artistic expressiveness and devotion.
The presentation of the church is enhanced by its churchyard and access staircase, which underwent arrangements in the 20th century. These elements were designed to give the ensemble a scenographic appearance, contributing to the beauty of the site and the way the temple integrates and stands out in the urban landscape. The care given to the exterior surroundings invites appreciation of its architecture and its placement.
