His memory is perpetuated in Viseu through this work, which underlines the importance of his contribution and the legacy he left in the Portuguese collective consciousness.

Sculpture Details

The monument, inaugurated in 1984, was created by the sculptor Armindo Ribeiro (1916-2004). The central piece consists of a bronze statue, portrayed in natural size, which rises on a robust granite pedestal.

On the front face of the pedestal, a metal plaque presents Sá Carneiro's name and life dates. On the back, a vertical monolith displays one of his most well-known declarations: "THE PERSON IS THE MEASURE AND THE END OF / ALL HUMAN ACTIVITY / AND POLITICS MUST BE AT THE / SERVICE OF THEIR COMPLETE REALIZATION / SÁ CARNEIRO". This quote invites reflection on the principles that guided him.

The Human Presence

The representation of Francisco Sá Carneiro in this sculpture stands out for its human and unpretentious approach, diverging from the monumentality traditionally associated with historical figures. His facial features are visible, and the figure is presented with a book in his left hand and a clenched fist in his right, elements that symbolize his convictions and his journey.
