Location

The Mother Church of Santa Marinha de Trevões is located in the urban area of the locality of Trevões, integrated into the parish of Trevões e Espinhosa, in the municipality of São João da Pesqueira. The temple is situated in a wide square that gently slopes. This square is framed by residential houses, some of which are notable 18th-century buildings, contributing to an environment of patrimonial richness. The main access to the church is via curved steps, inviting approach.

A Journey Through History

The history of the Church of Santa Marinha, dedicated to its patron saint, dates back to a medieval foundation, with indications pointing to its construction between the 12th and 13th centuries. During demolitions in the 18th century, to erect the new bell tower, stones with ancient inscriptions and symbols were discovered, which had been incorporated into the new structure, and there is a record of graves in the churchyard, emphasizing its profound antiquity. Most of the building seen today was constructed in the 15th and 16th centuries, a period during which late Gothic elements were incorporated, visible, for example, in the corbels of the main portal and the triumphal arch. The current and imposing bell tower is a more recent addition, dated 1775, commissioned by Bishop D. Manuel de Vasconcelos Pereira.

The Exterior Architecture

The exterior of the church stands out for its main facade, which appears austere yet inviting. In the center, a large pointed arch portal stands out, above which an 18th-century window is opened. Adjoining this facade is the grand three-tiered bell tower, with bell openings in perfect round arches and crowned by a balustrade and pinnacles. On the north side of the church, a secondary portal, also with a pointed arch and chamfered intrados, is notable, and on the south facade, a pulpit adds richness to the external details of the complex.

The Interior Treasure

Inside, the church reveals a single nave, with a paved floor where tombstones can still be distinguished. The nave ceiling is covered by elaborate wooden coffers, decorated with volutes and angels. Above the entrance, the high choir, erected in 1857, stands on stone columns and houses the holy water fonts. Near the entrance, one can observe the baptismal font, carved in granite and decorated with lobes, dating from the 15th or 16th centuries. The triumphal arch, which separates the nave from the chancel, is entirely covered in National Style gilt carving, featuring an intricate theme of stylized foliage and angels holding grapes. In the chancel, the ceiling is also lined with wooden coffers, painted with vegetal motifs and crowned by the episcopal coat of arms of the Diocese of Lamego. The main altarpiece is also a piece of National Style gilt carving. Behind this altarpiece, two 16th-century fresco paintings were recently revealed, adding a valuable layer to the temple's artistic richness. On the Epistle side, a visit to the Chapel of the Melos reveals an octagonal wooden ceiling and an imposing Mannerist altarpiece, gilded and polychromed, with tempera-painted panels.
