The Treixedo Pillory once stood in the heart of the locality of Treixedo, which is part of the Union of Parishes of Treixedo and Nagozela, in the municipality of Santa Comba Dão. Although the physical structure of the pillory is not currently visible, its original location is known to have been in an urban area, traditionally associated with Largo de São João (St. John's Square). This point serves as a place of memory in the urbanization of the settlement.
Dating back to the 16th century, the Treixedo Pillory was a fundamental landmark in the life of the settlement. Pillories, in Portugal, symbolized the judicial authority and autonomy of a municipality (concelho), allowing for the administration of local justice. The presence of this pillory attests to Treixedo's status and importance at the time, indicating that the locality possessed an ordinary judge and its own town council (câmara), symbols of its administrative independence.
Despite its historical relevance, the pillory's original structure was destroyed at the end of the 19th century. Although fragments of the granite stonework that composed it were recovered and stored at different times in the 20th century, its current whereabouts are uncertain, and local authorities have no knowledge of its location.
Although the Treixedo Pillory is not a visible physical structure today, its historical and cultural value remains recognized. This site was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1933, underlining its importance in national heritage. The classification highlights the significance this element had for the history of the locality and for understanding the judicial and administrative organization of the Portuguese past.
A visit to the site where the pillory once stood invites reflection on the rich history of Treixedo and on how power and justice were exercised in remote times. It is a testament to collective memory and the evolution of community life.
