The Chapel of Santa Bárbara is situated in the village of Travasso, part of the Barreiros and Cepões area, in the municipality of Viseu. It stands atop a hill, enjoying an isolated and elevated position, at an altitude of approximately 360 meters. This vantage point offers a vast perspective over the surrounding rural landscape, revealing a succession of valleys, hills, and extensive vineyard areas that characterize the region.
This chapel, built in the 20th century, is an example of the popular religious architecture of the period. Its structure features a simple longitudinal plan, housing a single, unadorned interior space. The main facade is distinguished by its partial cladding in granite blocks, whose dark joints create a visual contrast. At its center, a wide segmental arch portal invites entry, flanked by rectangular slits that allow light to pass through. At the apex of the gable, a lozenge-shaped cartouche marks the date of 1977, the probable year of its construction or a significant reconstruction.
More than a place of worship, the Chapel of Santa Bárbara functions as a remarkable natural viewpoint. The churchyard, a dirt clearing surrounding the chapel, is delimited by schist walls, inviting visitors to linger and observe. From here, it is possible to contemplate a vast and encompassing landscape that includes various settlements, the orography of the hills, and the extensive vineyard terraces that shape the visual identity of this area in the Viseu district. It is a serene space, ideal for appreciating the tranquility of the rural environment and capturing the beauty of the view.
