Monastery of the Holy Sepulchre or Monastery of the Holy Waters

Category: Religious Architecture > Monastery

District: Viseu > Penalva do Castelo > Trancozelos > Águas Santas

Location

Located in the Águas Santas area, in the village of Trancozelos, municipality of Penalva do Castelo, this monastery enjoys a rural and tranquil setting. It stands isolated on a hillside, on the left bank of the Dão River, surrounded by agricultural fields and a few dwellings, creating an atmosphere of calm and introspection.

Centuries of History

The Monastery of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as Águas Santas Monastery, likely originated in the 12th century, with a connection to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and possible patronage from King D. Afonso Henriques. Its historical relevance is underscored by its mention in medieval documents, such as the Inquiries of D. Afonso III in 1258, which already noted the vast properties under its jurisdiction. In the 19th century, the monastery was acquired by Casa da Ínsua, which led to the adaptation of part of its structures for agricultural purposes.

Architectural Features and Gothic Essence

The monastery's architecture reflects the various eras that shaped this place, with elements ranging from the 12th to the 19th century. The church stands out for its pointed arch openings, a characteristic that suggests a renovation during the Gothic period. Although the complex has undergone adaptations over the years, it remains organized around a quadrangular interior courtyard. In this courtyard, it is possible to observe rock-cut tombs, some of which are partially hidden by the chapel's facade, offering a unique glimpse into the past.

Symbols and Unique Details

As one explores the monastery, attention is captivated by details that tell stories. On the main portal, it is possible to identify the symbols of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, through its Patriarchal Cross. Additionally, a fleur-de-lis engraved on one of the voussoirs of the portal arch marks the former ownership of Casa da Ínsua. Despite modifications that transformed part of the former monastic dependencies into agricultural support buildings, the simplicity of the granite masonry and the stonework frames adorning the rectilinear openings lend the space a rural authenticity. The presence of a typical Beira-style balcony in the former dwelling adds a distinctive touch to this historic site.
