The Viriato Theatre is located in the Largo Mouzinho de Albuquerque, in the heart of the city of Viseu. Its central position makes it a cultural landmark, easily accessible and integrated into the city's urban dynamics.
Inaugurated in the late 19th century as Theatro Boa União, this performance space experienced a significant period of inactivity, closing its doors in 1960. However, after almost four decades, it underwent an ambitious recovery project. It reopened to the public in January 1999, marking a new chapter in Viseu's cultural life. This renaissance transformed the Viriato Theatre into one of the most important centers for performing arts in the region.
Since its reopening, the Viriato Theatre has been dedicated to hosting and fostering artistic diversity, with a regular program encompassing music, theatre, dance, and new circus. It is a space for creation and sharing, seeking to bring the community closer to contemporary artistic trends. In addition to presenting national and international performances, the theatre is also the permanent home of the renowned Companhia Paulo Ribeiro, actively contributing to the production and development of dance in the country.
Throughout its trajectory, the Viriato Theatre has established itself as a model for cultural decentralization in Portugal. Its mission to energize the artistic life of Viseu and promote dialogue through art has been publicly recognized. In 2019, on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, the institution was distinguished with the Title of Honorary Member of the Order of Merit by the President of the Portuguese Republic, a testament to its value and impact on national culture.
