Location

Quinta da Aveleira is nestled in the locality of Távora e Pereiro, in the municipality of Tabuaço, immersed in the unique landscape of the Douro Region. It is situated on a steep slope, where schist and granite soils shape an authentic rural setting. Its strategic position offers a privileged view over the property and the natural surroundings.

Its boundaries are defined by natural and built elements, including the Quintã stream to the north. The property extends to the banks of the Távora River, which crosses the area to the southeast and east, complementing the scenic beauty of the area with vast extensions of pine and chestnut trees that stretch to the horizon to the west and southwest.

History and Heritage Character

The history of Quinta da Aveleira dates back to the 10th century, with records of donations linking it to the ancient Monastery of São Pedro das Águias. In the 18th century, the property was owned by the illustrious Távora family, and D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha Leme Cernache, an influential figure of the time, led its reconstruction. It is notable that some of the plans for this work are attributed to the renowned architect Nicolau Nasoni, known for various works in the Porto region.

The quinta played a significant role in the history of the Douro Vinhateiro, having been mentioned in the Pombaline demarcations of 1758 as a producer of first-quality wines. A granite landmark with the inscription "FEITORIA" near the main portal and an epigraphic slab on the courtyard wall testify to its ancient importance and rich heritage, with the complex classified as a Property of Municipal Interest since 2003.

Architecture and Environment

The architectural complex of Quinta da Aveleira presents a fusion of erudite 18th-century and vernacular 19th and 20th-century styles. The buildings, arranged around an extensive central courtyard, are notable for their ashlar walls, pilasters, and pinnacles that hark back to the 18th century. Access to the built core is marked by a private road lined with imposing cedars, willows, and camellias, and by Portuguese cobblestone paths, which contribute to the traditional and well-maintained ambiance of the quinta.

At the heart of the complex, the Baroque chapel stands out, integrated into the main building of the quinta. The wine vats warehouse, with its 18th-century architecture, and the winery, which displays an inscribed cartouche with the date of "1794" and where the old lagares (wine presses) were located, reveal the productive vocation and history of viticulture on the site. Small dovecotes and ashlar annexes complete this core, all set on robust terraces supported by granite and schist walls.

The Viticultural Landscape

Quinta da Aveleira is a living example of the evolution of the Douro viticultural landscape. Different types of vineyard "terracing" can be observed, from the traditional pre-phylloxera terraces, with schist and granite walls, to the more recent patamares (platforms) and vineyards in rows. This diversity reflects the adaptation of vine cultivation to the region's steep slopes over the centuries. In addition to the vineyards, the property includes orchard and vegetable garden areas near the buildings, contributing to the agricultural richness of the site.
