The Pillory of Tarouca stands in Praça 25 de Abril (April 25th Square), right in the heart of the village, within its historic centre. Its central position reflects the importance it once held as a focal point for civic and judicial life. It is a landmark that contributes to the historical ambiance of the square, inviting a moment of observation of the surroundings.
This granite monument, believed to have been erected during the 16th century, represents a vestige of Tarouca's municipal power and autonomy. Although the village's charter dates back to 1272, it was from the 16th century onwards that this pillory assumed its role as a symbol of justice and administration, serving the judicial functions of the time.
Its history is particularly curious: for part of the 20th century, the Pillory was kept in a private cellar, having been reused as a support. However, in 2021, this historical element returned to Praça 25 de Abril, where it was originally located, with great significance, restoring its visibility and the symbolism it holds for the community of Tarouca.
The Pillory of Tarouca stands out for its robust construction in granite ashlar. It features a circular base set on a quadrangular platform, from which an octagonal shaft rises. At the top of the shaft, there is an octagonal capital, marked by a prominent rim and plain faces.
The finial piece is particularly notable: it has a conical pyramidal shape, ornamented with vegetal motifs, including eight rosettes. Further up, the conical surface is delicately decorated with eight imbricated leaves, which give the ensemble a subtle beauty. This example is classified as a Public Interest Property, attesting to its heritage value.
