The Church of Saint Peter of Tarouca is located in the village that bears its name, in the municipality of Tarouca. It is situated in a central area, integrated into the urban landscape of the locality, and serves as a landmark for visitors to the region.
The history of the Church of Saint Peter of Tarouca is long, with the first documentary references appearing as early as 1163. Its initial construction dates back to the 12th century, having undergone significant renovations in the 13th and 16th centuries, which shaped its current appearance.
Due to its undeniable historical and architectural value, the church was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1948. This recognition underscores its importance as one of the main monuments in the region.
The Church of Saint Peter of Tarouca is a testament to artistic evolution, revealing a notable transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its rectangular-plan structure adapts to the terrain, with a noticeable internal division into two sections with different levels.
Its portals are noteworthy. The main access, facing west, is preceded by a semicircular staircase and features two pairs of columns with decorated capitals, supporting ogival archivolts. On the north facade, there is a second entrance with three ogival arches and a peculiar triangular bell. Inside, the chancel surprises with its ceiling covered by painted coffers, and on the south facade, an exterior staircase leads to the sacristy and the choir, the latter supported by granite columns.
