The Pillory of Soutelo do Douro is located in the peaceful village of Soutelo do Douro, in the municipality of São João da Pesqueira. It stands in a small square, characterized by a gentle slope, and is flanked by houses that maintain their traditional features, providing a genuine atmosphere integrated into the village's urban fabric.
This pillory dates back to the 16th century, marking a period of significant affirmation of municipal powers in Portugal. Its construction is intrinsically linked to the renewal of the charter for Soutelo do Douro, a document granted by King Manuel I in 1514.
In its time, the pillory symbolized the judicial authority and administrative autonomy of the former town, functioning as a central landmark for public life and the administration of justice. Its enduring presence serves as a testament to the existence of the former municipality of Soutelo do Douro, which was abolished in 1836 as part of the liberal administrative reforms and integrated into the municipality of São João da Pesqueira.
Erected in robust granite stonework, this pillory rests on a quadrangular base, composed of three tiered steps that stand out for their projecting edges. Its shaft has a singularly elegant shape, featuring a quatrefoil section, which gives it an unusual appearance that evokes a bundle of small columns through its vertical lobes.
At the top, a prismatic finishing piece displays symbolic elements of great relevance: the national coat of arms, the armillary sphere (a symbol widely associated with the reign of King Manuel I), and several rosettes. The entire structure is crowned by a final bell-shaped piece, completing its imposing silhouette.
