Casa do Loureiro is located in the tranquil area of Silgueiros, in the locality of Loureiro, within the municipality of Viseu. This remarkable complex is situated on the right bank of the Dão river, a few kilometres from the city of Viseu, proving to be a point of interest that harmonizes rurality with proximity to an urban centre. Access is gained by crossing the local fairground, in a predominantly rural and wine-growing environment, characteristic of the region.
This architectural complex, classified as a Property of Municipal Interest since 2004, stands out for its unique composition. Its central element is a manor house, which is joined by an imposing medieval battlemented tower, displaying a coat of arms. The complex also includes two chapels of distinct styles: one, which stands separated from the main body, of Manueline design, associated with the figure of Luís de Loureiro, and another annexed to the palace, in Mannerist style. Both feature different coats of arms, which tell the story of the lineages that inhabited here.
With roots stretching back to the 12th century, around 1186, Casa do Loureiro is a living testament to local history, linked from early on to figures such as Daganel and D. Sancha Gonçalves, the first known lords of the Honra do Loureiro. Over the centuries, the manor house was the cradle of the Loureiro de Silgueiros family and the scene of complex divisions, with the coexistence of two distinct entails that, at one point, even divided the manor house itself with granite blocks, reflecting ancient family rivalries. Its history extends into the 19th century, when it was acquired by the Santos Lima family, who have preserved it to this day, keeping its essence and heritage alive.
The Casa do Loureiro property is a vast space, enriched by extensive vineyard areas and notable natural elements. In its park, several trees classified as Monumental Trees of Portugal stand out, such as a secular Yew tree, believed to predate the nation itself, an imposing Eucalyptus, and a majestic Sequoia. In addition to the botanical richness, the site houses archaeological remains of great value, including the pre-Roman Celtic idol known as “Lusitano”, anthropomorphic tombs, and Roman lagares, which attest to the region's ancient connection to wine culture and human presence since remote times.
